Outcry as Jalel Brick issues a blasphemous video
For those who don't know Jalel Brick, he is a Tunisian left wing activist living in France, well known for his videos on Facebook and Youtube, where he often attacks and denigrades islamist parties and figures in Tunisia and the Arab world. He is one of the most outspoken enemy to Nahdha Party of Tunisia, that presently leads a coalition government.
Jalel brick's speech and political views have always been harsh and rude against his political opponents, (especially those who have a religious background, that he calls "merchants of religion", "the Criminal Brothers", his sarcastic twist to "the muslim brothers"). He accuses them of instrumentalising religion to achieve their political schemes, of exploiting religion to dominate society. He claims that their sole objective is their own interests,dominance and power, not the interests of tunisian people.
He employs a common, down to earth language style, often characterized by dirty words!
that explains part of his polularity, especially among young Tunisians. Nevertheless, Jalel Brick is not an ordinary or just a vulgar populist blogger, but rather a competent, sincere, experienced political analyst. He fights for a secular, modern and free Tunisia. He is an advocate of the freedom of women, emancipation, equality with men. So when Tunisian Salafis occupied Mannouba University, interrupted courses to claim students wearing niqab be permitted to attend courses and pass exams with idendity check, he made many videos denouncing the threat to Tunisia's moderate way of life, and an attempt to impose a Afghan/ Saudi/ Wahabi way of life, strange to Tunisian's nature. He often claims Nahdha is deliberately trying to change Tunisia to a theocracy, with influence of Qatar and other influencial Sheicks.
His videos just echo a majority of tunisians' state of mind, express their anger towards, rejection of, hardline islamists and religious extremists. intolerance. threats to liberal values and modernity. For them, Jalel Brick endorses a moderate, open to modernity form of religion and opposes to the extent of animosity, all forms of the exploitation of religion for politicals puroposes, for power.
However, his last video seems to have exceeded limits. In this video he posted 2 days ago, he made abhorrent statements, crude criticism against the islamic religion and its symbols, which shocked the majority of viewers, and many considered as utterly blasphemous.
Hardline islamists have issued statements where they threaten to kill Jalel Brick for punishmenet. Legal action against him may also be taken in France, by the Tunsia government.
Although Jalel Brick immediately withdrew the incriminated video and soon made another , where he expressed his regrets and apologized for his previous blasphemous video, many thin that he will never be able to mend his great error, and that his life will always be threatened.
